It’s certainly not difficult to see the appeal of these wondrous carved book sculptures by Brian Dettmer, which are like archeological digs into the realm of the printed work and human knowledge. What is hard to imagine though, for me, is the enormous amount of time and skill each one represents; they’re truly masterpieces of a unique art form.
I’ve seen many kinds of tiny things carved into miniature sculptures (rice, hair, and seeds to name a few), but none as charming as these pencil leads lovingly crafted—and freely gifted—by their creator, Dalton Ghetti. For perhaps obvious reasons, I’m especially fond of the alphabet, but they are all fantastic.
The photographer is Paul Octavious, and his work is often intriguing if not outright beguiling. In the case of this, his series on books, it’s also charming and witty without being coy.
Truly astounding work made from single sheets of paper, and a terrific source for ideas. I doubt that I would ever have the patience to create one of these.
